Abstract Context The amount and configuration of habitat are independent but tightly linked landscape characteristics which often confounded in ecological studies. Differentiating the effects each characteristic is critical for conservation, because mechanisms by they influence populations distinct. While studies that have measured separately found former to be more important, a subset these suggest can vital species when low (10–30%).
